Conservation of Castle
The original keep of Killeen Castle dates from medieval times. Set in over 500 acres of mature parkland, the castle forms the focus of the estate. It was severely damaged in a fire in 1982 which destroyed most of the roof and interior. It lay derelict for over 25 years. The repair works were undertaken in two phases. The basic structure of the building was restored by repairing all of the external walls and windows and the construction of a new roof and floors. In order to allow work to proceed through the winter months and in order to accellerate the drying out process, an eight storey enclosing structure was formed with scaffolding, metal decking and reinforced sheeting. The works to the external fabric were completed in little over 12 months.
