In 2018 MCA Architects were appointed as Lead Technical Advisor by the HSE to the Community Nursing Unit (CNU) project – a Public Private Partnership (PPP) for the design and construction of several Community Nursing Units across Ireland. The buildings will provide spaces for between 50 and 120 residents, depending on the location.

The largest of these will be at St. Finbarr’s Hospital in Cork, Killarney Co. Kerry and Thomastown in Kilkenny. The buildings at Ardee, Midleton, Athlone and Clonmel will each accommodate 50 residents. Athlone will also have a day centre for non residential users.

The CNUs will provide spaces for between 50 and 120 residents, depending on the location.

Features vary across each project in accordance with HSE requirements and scale; they will include a variety of bright and uplifting spaces, en-suite bed rooms, dining facilities, sunroom, breakout areas and gardens.

The design and development of these community based units will play a vital part in responding to the challenge of Ireland’s ageing population and MCA Architects feel privileged to play a role in such an important social and national healthcare project.
